MTN South Africa and Intel sign a deal to accelerate broadband in Africa.

MTN Group - South Africa has signed a memorandum of understanding with the USA's Intel Corporation which will see the two companies collaborating to accelerate the deployment of broadband access in Africa and the Middle East.

The collaboration covers a wide spectrum of initiatives, including areas such as broadband access through pushing WiMax deployment, offering affordable PC bundles for ordinary African consumers and entrepreneurs, and introducing cost-effective internet browsing devices.

E-tutor software introduced to Lagos schools

Lagos State government introduced an education software known as e-tutor in its schools, as part of its continuous efforts to improve the quality of education in the state.
The software, which was launched, in collaboration with an IT firm, Cognitive Solutions, would complement class teachers' efforts and enable students to learn at their own pace and have fun in the process.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Education, Mrs. Omolara Erogbogbo said the move was part of the state government's efforts aimed at exploring additional positive ways of improving on the delivery of quality education to students in its schools.
She said the software, which comes in 15 subjects for secondary schools, was developed after some years of research, which revealed that there was a huge gap between examiners' expectation and students' performance, especially in Mathematics and the Sciences.

Bharti Airtel to acquire back 22% of Zain Zambia public listed stakes.

Bharti Airtel - Zain AfricaZAIN Zambia Plc, trading as Celtel Zambia, is set to suspend transactions on Lusaka Stcok Exchange (LuSE) as Bharti Airtel prepares to buy the 22 per cent of the publicly-listed stake in the company.

According to a note sent to investors and the public,“Zain Zambia shareholders and public are hereby advised that trading in Zain Zambia shares shall be suspended effective 22 July 2010 to facilitate an orderly process for establishing a record date of July 27 of the shareholders register for the purpose of the mandatory offer,”

SA telecom signs Nigerian sea-cable deal

MAIN One, a Nigerian-owned undersea cable project, has signed an agreement with Seacom and local group eFive Telecoms to build a 400m telecommunications fibreoptic cable “ring” from SA to Nigeria.

With Main One’s fibre ring, bandwidth prices are expected to fall further given increased levels of competition.

The new fibre ring cable will add to the objectives of other undersea cables such as Seacom and West Africa Cable Systems to remove the international infrastructure bottleneck in Africa.

Domain '.africa' to be discussed in the AITEC Banking and Mobile Money conference.

FOLLOWING the decision of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) board to expand the generic top-level domain space from four -'.com,' '.org,' '.net,' and '.biz' - to 21, DotConnectAfrica, the operator of the proposed '.africa' domain name is pushing to popularise the initiative at the AITEC Banking and Mobile Money West Africa billed to hold at the EKO Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island Lagos between 11 and 12 May 2010.

Executive Director of DotConnectAfrica, Ms. Sophia Bekele, who will be speaking on the topic: ".Africa - the New Internet Currency," at the Lagos conference, is expected to kick-start discussions and engage participants on how to get African businesses and individual buy into the '.africa' project.
