IBM makes 100 years of existence

IBM today wokeup on "Happy Birthday" song all over the world as it marked its 100th anniversary of its founding on June 16, 1911.
To celebrate the milestone, the company is releasing a book, "Making the World Work Better: The Ideas That Shaped a Century and a Company," and debuting a new film, "Wild Ducks,".
Some of IBM's achievements:-

  • Floppy Disk Drive - in 1971
The first floppy was an 8-inch flexible plastic disk coated with magnetic iron oxide; computer data was written to and read from the disk's surface.

The nickname "floppy" came from the disk's flexibility. The floppy disk was considered a revolutionary device in the "History of Computers" for its portability which provided a new and easy physical means of transporting data from computer to computer.
Others were 5 1/4-inch, 3 1/2-inch, Post Floppy Disk.

Apple's iPad 2 launched.

Apple Buys Maker of Fast Chips, Intrinsity.

Apple has bought another chip maker Intrinsity in the event of gaining an edge over its competitors with the fastest mobile chip.

Apple has acquired a small Austin, Tex., company called Intrinsity, known for making zippy versions of a computer chip often found in mobile devices. The deal, which closed late last month and was confirmed by Apple on Tuesday, shows the company continuing to try to gain an edge in the mobile device market by purchasing technology and chip experts.
It is the second time in two years that Apple has purchased a small chip company to gain critical technology for making a faster processor that uses less energy.

Sony to finally stop the manufacture and sale of 3.5inch floppy disk.

The days of the 3.5-inch floppy disk are now officially numbered.

Sony, which boasts 70 percent of the anemic market, announced Friday that it would end Japanese sales of the ancient storage medium in March 2011, according to a report in the Mainichi Daily newspaper.

The 3.5-inch floppy was a ubiquitous and necessary component for storing and transferring files between personal computers for nearly three decades.
Sony pioneered the 3.5-inch floppy disk in 1981, eventually replacing the 5.25-inch floppy disk that had previously been the popular storage format.
