A coder uses HTML5 to recreate COMMAND & CONQUER game.

A coder Aditya Ravi Shankar has recreated classic strategy game Command & Conquer entirely in HTML5, running on 69k of Javascript.

Aditya Ravi Shankar built the clone in an attempt to improve his coding skills. He set himself a month to rebuild the game in the browser, chopping through the original game's files to get sprites, sounds and specs exactly right.

"In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS," says Shankar, in a post about the game's development on his blog. "Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn't the smartest idea."

Shankar's recreation of the game includes buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, and the ability to sell and repair buildings. It has fog of war, too, a pannable map, different cursors, tooltips, and drag selection for multiple units. For the time being, however, it's limited to just a few buildings and units, a very small map, and the occasional glitch -- a few of our tanks got stuck in the sea during testing.

Microsoft snubs Adobe’s Flash

Computer giant Microsoft unveiled new features and applications for their forthcoming Windows 8 operating system, but also let slip that Internet Explorer 10 won’t support any plug-ins or Adobe’s Flash, which is popular among many websites.

The company said that IE10 will be completely reliant on HTML5, while Flash and other plug-ins will still be available on the desktop version of the Windows 8 OS.

Google Warns Users They May Be Infected By Malware

Google has identified a piece of malware that is redirecting unusual search traffic to its servers, prompting the company to warn affected users.

“Recently, we found some unusual search traffic while performing routine maintenance on one of our data centers,” security engineer Damian Menscher wrote on the company’s blog.

Google’s Facebook rival takes off

Google's ambitious attempt to take on Facebook is bearing fruit with Google+ now counting more than 10 million members and more than a billion items are shared there every day.

But Google didn't build its new Plus service simply to have an online hangout like Facebook.
Rather, Google's new social-networking endeavor is about trying to gain valuable insights into people's lives and relationships. This could help the company do a better job of targeting ads so that advertisers would pay more and have less reason to spend their money on Facebook.
